The Fair Trade movement has caused many consumers to ignore it due to the reasons enumerated in the article. I subscribe to Small Farmers as a result of your article on small farmers growing rooibos in Western Cape, South Africa. I buy rooibos from a company formed that is owned by “small farmers” and it’s been successful in marketing their rooibos crops since 1995. I buy my other ingredients from small farmers in New Mexico. I have the resulting tea beverage product packed at a New Mexico Native American Reservation. So we qualify for all of the “good stuff” by “adding value” at the small producer level, I wouldn’t seek the Fair Trade designation. We have enough just doing the right things.
