The Reverse Trick-or-Treating campaign is a great way to spread the work about Fair Trade chocolate. For World Fair Trade Day, Handmade Expressions, a Fair Trade wholesaler, raised awareness about Fair Trade by handing out Fair Trade coffee and Divine Fair Trade chocolate at different locations around Austin. They got a really good response rate from people; they were willing to listen and learn about Fair Trade, especially since they got some free coffee and chocolate out of it! I think actions like this really make people interested in the topic and willing to listen.

The International Labor Rights Forum has been doing great work to keep the industry's feet to the fire. For example, one can go <a href="http://laborrightsblog.typepad.com/international_labor_right/2009/08/child-trafficking-in-the-cocoa-industry-continues-but-theres-a-new-way-to-take-action.html" rel="nofollow">here</a> to read their response to the Interpol announcment and about various actions people can take to prod the industry to get serious.

You'll see a number of references to the just completed S'mores campaign to push Hershey's, as well as other ongoing efforts.

The next big effort is a collaboration between the ILRF, Equal Exchange, Global Exchange, and many other groups to carry out the 3rd annual Reverse Trick-or-Treating campaign. Last year we reached about 200,000 households nationwide with a message about the cocoa/child labor problem and the Fair Trade alternative.

We'll soon post more information about this campaign at www.EqualExchange.coop/Reverse (if you go there right now- Aug 14 -- you'll see last year's info. )
