I only found out about the issue of fair trade bananas recently while checking out with my Dole organic bananas. The cashier mentioned that she cares not if the banana is organic or conventional, she looks for fair trade bananas and produce. So in my research I came to this article. Chiquita and Dole were used so interchangeably in this article, I began to think that Dole was a part of Chiquita. But no, they both appear to underpay those who grow our produce such that farmers south of the USA cannot earn a living wage if they work the land. Fair trade bananas are available in Iowa and Wisconsin, but not in Illinois.

Thanks for highlighting this. I just heard about what Dole's been doing to real farmers in Peru.... this is a form of Greenwash for sure. Fair access to markets by the small farmers isnt what Dole is interested in.
